CURRENT APPOINTMENT (Started August 2024)

Faculty Fellow in Biology Education Research

Department of Biology

Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY, 13244

I lead an independent research program centered on the critical thinking of undergraduates and how instructors operationalize critical thinking in the STEM classroom using backward design, with the intent to develop course materials and pedagogical tools for STEM curricula based on the findings. I also lead a multi-disciplinary research team to investigate student success and retention in introductory (generally large-enrollment) STEM courses at Syracuse University and develop appropriate pedagogical and inclusive interventions, with a particular focus on underrepresented students (e.g., first-generation, racial minorities).

PRIOR APPOINTMENT (2020-2024)

Postdoctoral Fellow in Biology Education

Cornell Discipline-based Education Research group

PIs: Michelle Smith & Natasha Holmes

Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology

Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 14853

In this position, my main project focused on development of an instrument to measure undergraduates’ critical thinking in ecology experimental contexts, known as the Biology Lab Inventory of Critical thinking in Ecology (Eco-BLIC). I was also involved in collaborations exploring social networks in physics classrooms, how faculty use open education resources, and developing learner-centered curriculum materials for both in-person and virtual biology courses, among others.
